Small Boat
Construction.
Traditional
solid wood construction is still a great way to build a boat,
and as oil prices (and therefore the price of glass-fibre boats
) increase, many people are remembering all the advantages of
wooden construction, one of the main ones being that timber is a
renewable resource.
At
Berry boats
we also use a successful method that combines wood with
modern man-made materials. Glued clinker plywood is more than just
a compromise between solid wood and fibreglass building techniques.
A boat built this way is light for it's size, strong and tough, and most
importantly looks beautiful.
Unless lightness
is the absolute top priority, we recommend that the boat is
sheathed in a thin skin of woven glass fibre fabric, bonded to
the hull with epoxy resin. This will not show when the
boat is completed, and will add a tough surface to the hull to
resist the inevitable bumps and scrapes that occur when a boat
is used often, (you will find that a simple, light-weight boat
is so easy to put on the water that a half hour relaxing after work is easily
achievable). |
